CHRISTMAS SAFETY TIPS
Christmas Tree Safety

A real tree should not lose green needles when you tap it on the ground.
Cut 1 inch off the trunk to help absorb water.

Leave the tree outside until ready to decorate

The stand should hold at least 1 gallon of water.

Check the water level every day.

Keep the tree away from floor heaters, fire places or other heat sources.

Use only UL-listed lights and no more than 3 strands linked together.

Use miniature lights which have cool-burning bulbs.

Dispose of the tree properly.

Install a smoke detector or new batteries in the one(s) you have and TEST it.

Use only outdoor lights outside your home.

Examine light strings each year and discard worn ones.

Fasten the bulbs securely and point the sockets down to avoid moisture build up.

Connect no more than three stands together.

Never use indoor extension cords outside.

Avoid overloading wall outlets and extension cords.


Keep outdoor electrical connectors above ground and out of puddles and snow.

Have an operable fire extinguisher readily available.

    1. Good lighting is a deterrent to Crime
    2. Trim shrubs and tree so doors and windows can be seen from the road
    3. Keep doors and windows locked, even when at home
    4. Check to see who is at the door before opening
    5. Don't let strangers in to make phone calls, make them yourself
    6. Use reflective numbers on your house to help police and fire personnel identify your house
    7. Make sure doors have deadbolts installed on them
    8. Never carry identification on your key rings
    9. Never hide a key outside - Burglars know the hiding places
    10. Install a burglar alarm if necessary
