Expansion planned for RLC's Pinckneyville campus

INA — The Rend Lake College Board approved submitting plans for an expansion of the Murphy-Wall Campus in Pinckneyville to the Illinois Community College Board for consideration.

In addition, while awaiting approval from the ICCB, the board approved going out for bid on the projected $400,000 project.

“This project is being 100 percent funded by the Rend Lake College Foundation,” RLC President Charley Holstein said. “Without their donations, this project would not have moved forward.”

The RLC Foundation announced the project in September. The expansion includes a new 1,980-square-foot science laboratory addition, which would allow students taking classes in Pinckneyville to take all necessary classes for an associate’s degree in their town. At this time, students must take science lab classes at the main campus in Ina.

“Because the college relies heavily on funding from a state of Illinois that is facing an austere financial situation, we would not have the resources available for this project if it were not for the Foundation’s work,” Holstein previously said.

Since the project is expected to exceed the $50,000 limit set by the ICCB guidelines, it must be advertised for competitive bids, according to information from the college.

The Murphy-Wall campus opened in 2002. Currently, it has bathroom facilities, a computer lab, a distance learning classroom, a presentation classroom, two offices and a reception area. There is no room for a science laboratory, which the new expansion will correct.

“Lack of sufficient science laboratory space has been an issue on the main Rend Lake College Ina campus for several years,” the application to ICCB states.

“An addition of this facility will serve to provide additional laboratory space for the entire college community.”
