The Pyramid State Park is just three short miles from downtown Pinckneyville. The park consists of heavily forested hills and many lakes and ponds. Southern Illinois University formerly used 924 acres for research. Additional acquisitions have brought the total acreage to nearly 3,178 acres which includes more than 350 acres of water. An additional 3,500 acres of leased lands provides hunting opportunities by permit only. Pyramid gets its name from a coal mine that once existed here.

The Pinckneyville City Lake is a 190 acre impoundment lake in a naturally beautiful setting on the City's northside. In addition to supplying the City's drinking water the lake is a popular recreational site. The facility is improved with paved roads and parking lots, restrooms, boat launch ramp, dock, and picnic facilities. The lake is professionally managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist and boasts some of the areas best sport fishing opportunities. The lake is open to the public. There is a 10 h.p. limit on boat motors.
